In Memory

Ellen Elizabeth Sands (Eckert)

ELLEN ELIZABETH (Sands) ECKERT, age 63, wife of Dr. J. Kevin Eckert, the soul mate and love of her life for 28 years, mother of John Winter and Samuel James, brother of Michael (Gayle), died peacefully at home in Severna Park, Maryland on January 31, 2013 following a courageous battle with breast cancer.

She was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1949 to Alice (Winter) Sands, a renowned Cleveland artist, and Leonard Sands (both deceased). She was raised and lived in Shaker Heights until, in the mid-1980s, she moved to Maryland with her husband, Kevin, to raise her family. After working as a graphic designer for The Cleveland Clinic Foundation and several large companies including Booz Allen and Hamilton, she earned a Master's in Publication Design from the University of Baltimore in 1997, noting she was "a jack of all trades and a masters in one."

A fantastic artist, keen witted raconteur, loving and loyal friend, dedicated animal lover, expert knitter, passionate environmentalist, progressive thinker, and steadfast vegan, she mostly enjoyed spending time with her wonderful family near the water or in the mountains. Ellen was proudest of her two sons, John and Sam. They, and Kevin, were unquestionably the light of her life. She will be greatly missed by her family, a host of many devoted friends and her beloved Westies, Josephine and Finnegan. The family wishes to thank the staff of Johns Hopkins and in particular Roisin Connelly, MD, for tireless dedication, innovation and care. A memorial service was held February 16, 2013 at the Blue Heron Center, Quiet Waters Park, Annapolis, MD.
